Safety

In 2005 there were 36.8 million people 65 and older in the United States. This age group accounts for 12% of the total population. Between 2004-2005, this age group increased by 457,000 people. In 2005, 27 of the 100 counties in North Carolina had a higher percentage of 60+ citizens than <18. It is projected that by 2020, 67 counties in North Carolina will have more persons age 60+ than <18. Among them will be Caswell, Davidson, and Montgomery and Rockingham counties.

This demographic shift will result in challenges in every aspect of community life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle must include consideration of the need for safety and security as we age. Older adults must take steps to minimize their risk of becoming victims of abuse neglect or exploitation. The community should include in their planning consideration driver safety, emergency preparedness, and response, to ensure a senior friendly environment.
